Build a CV for the job you want

Start with your experience. Check it against the job. Keep the version you sent.

See what the job asks for

One line, checked against one job

Save the posting and open Job fit. Say a support role asks for bug reports, and your CV says you helped customers with checkout problems. If you also reproduced those problems and sent the steps to a developer, say so. Both are useful experience. They tell different stories.

  • The job asks forClear bug reports
  • Your CV says“Helped customers with checkout problems.”
  • If you also reproduced them“Reproduced checkout bugs and sent developers the steps and screenshots.”

If you only handled the customer conversation, keep the original line.

Start with the CV you have

Upload your CV or build one from scratch. Add your experience, edit the wording and download a PDF or a text copy. You can change one line without rewriting the whole thing.

Use the parts that sound like you

Ghosted can suggest wording and draft a cover letter for the role. Read each suggestion before using it. Keep the facts you could explain in an interview. Leave out a tool you never used or a result you never measured.

Keep the version you sent

Once you apply, keep the job on your board so you can see who replied and where you want to follow up.

What’s in it

Everything a CV needs, in one place

Most CV tools stop at the template. Ghosted keeps going: it knows which job you’re applying for, what that job asks for, and which version of your CV went out with it. Six parts do the work.

  1. Start from what you have

Upload a PDF or Word file up to 4 MB and Ghosted reads it into sections you can edit, or start from scratch. If reading the file left something out, it tells you what, so nothing goes missing quietly.

  2. 12 designs, tried on your own CV

Pick a design by seeing your CV in it, not a stranger’s. Paper size, spacing and which sections show are yours to set.

  3. Job fit for every job

Save a posting and Ghosted reads what it asks for, then shows which of those your CV shows, which it hides, and which it doesn’t mention.

  4. Writing help you check

Ask for a clearer line, a shorter one, a summary, or bullets from your own notes. Each comes back as a suggestion beside your words. Nothing changes until you use it.

  5. The CV you sent, kept with the job

When you apply with a CV, Ghosted keeps that exact file with the job. A week later, when they call, you can read what they’re reading.

  6. Versions you can go back to

Save a version before a big change and restore it if the change doesn’t work out. Your history stays with the CV.

Step by step

From upload to a sent application

  1. Add your CV. Upload a PDF or Word file, or start from scratch. Ghosted reads an upload into sections: experience, education, skills and whatever else your CV has.
  2. Check what was read. If reading the file cut or left out anything, a report lists it with the text, so you can put it back or mark it checked.
  3. Pick a design. See your own CV in each design, choose one, and set the paper size and spacing.
  4. Add the job. Paste the link to the posting. Ghosted saves it to your board and reads what the job asks for.
  5. Open Job fit. See which requirements your CV shows, fix the ones you honestly can, and answer the ones only you know.
  6. Download, check and send. Download the PDF or a text copy and send it your usual way. When you mark the job applied with that CV, Ghosted keeps the exact file with the job.

The first time takes as long as your CV needs. After that, a new job is mostly steps four to six: add it, check the fit, send.

Job fit

How Job fit reads a posting

Job fit starts with the posting. Ghosted reads it once and lists what the job asks for, one requirement at a time, with the posting’s own words beside each. Then it looks for each one in your CV, in what the PDF actually prints, not in lines you’ve hidden from this version.

  1. Shown. A role, project or course shows it. Good: an interviewer can ask you about it.
  2. Could be clearer. It’s in your skills or summary, but no line shows where you used it. Usually one sentence fixes that.
  3. Hidden from this CV. It’s in something you’ve hidden, so employers won’t see it. Show it to count it.
  4. Not shown. Nothing on your CV mentions it. You say whether you have it, don’t, or whether it’s irrelevant. Only add it if it’s true.

Words only go so far. “Ran a team of 8” doesn’t say “lead”. For the requirements words didn’t find, Look in other words asks the AI which of your lines may show them, and why. It’s an estimate: it counts only after you say yes.

A gap is information

A requirement your CV doesn’t show isn’t a verdict. Sometimes you have it and never wrote it down. Sometimes you don’t, and the posting is a stretch. Job fit tells you which, so you can decide.

Honesty

It won’t put words in your mouth

AI writing tools are good at sounding impressive and bad at knowing what you did. So Ghosted holds every suggestion to one rule: it never adds a skill, an employer, a title or a number that your CV doesn’t already support. That rule is checked in code, after the AI answers, and a suggestion that breaks it is dropped before you see it.

When the honest version needs something only you know, you get a question instead of a guess. “Did you write the bug reports yourself, or pass them on?” is more useful than a confident sentence you can’t defend in an interview.

Your facts stay yours

Rewrites keep what your line says: who you worked for, what you did, the numbers you measured. They change how it reads, not what it claims.

Stock phrases are left out

“Results-driven”, “passionate”, lists of keywords: suggestions that only add those are dropped, and Ghosted tells you how many.

You choose every change

Use a suggestion, edit it, or skip it. Your CV doesn’t change on its own.

Cover letters

A cover letter from the same facts

On a job’s page, Ghosted can draft a cover letter for that role from your CV and the saved posting. The same honesty rule applies: the letter can only say what your CV supports. You edit it like any document, and it stays with the job.

On Free you can try it on 3 jobs; on Plus, every job. Letters you’ve written are always yours to edit and send, whatever plan you’re on.

Not every job needs one

If the posting doesn’t ask for a cover letter, a short email with your CV is often enough. Write a letter when you have something the CV can’t say.

The first page

Built for the first look

Whoever opens your CV decides quickly whether to keep reading. The designs keep to what holds attention: clear headings, plain sections, your strongest lines where the eye lands first.

Before it goes out, two checks help. Check the PDF’s text reads the words back out of the PDF the way a machine would, and gives you a plain-text copy for application forms that ask you to paste your CV. Check before you send looks over the whole CV for what’s worth a second look, each with a way to go straight there. Neither stops you downloading.

How long a first look takes

7.4 seconds

The average time recruiters spent on a CV’s first screen in Ladders’ 2018 eye-tracking study. Simple layouts with clear section headings held their attention best.

One CV or many

Your original, and a version for each job

A support role wants your customer work up top. A QA role wants your testing work first. You can do that with one CV, by editing it before each application, or keep a version for each job and leave your original alone.

One base CV (Free)

  • Point it at any job and open Job fit for that job
  • Reorder it, or show and hide sections, before you send it
  • The file you sent is still kept with each job

A version for each job (Plus)

  • Save a version for this job and keep your original
  • Each version is its own document: editing one never changes the others
  • When your original changes, each version can take the update

Before you start

Four things to decide first

Upload or start fresh

If you have a CV you like, upload it: Ghosted reads it into sections and keeps the original file too. If yours is years out of date, starting fresh is often quicker than fixing it.

Which file goes out

You can keep sending the file you uploaded, untouched, and use Ghosted only for Job fit. Or send the PDF the builder makes from your sections. The CV page always says which one employers get.

One CV, or one per kind of role

If you’re applying for two different kinds of job, two base CVs are clearer than one that tries to be both. Most people need one.

Where your strongest line goes

Pick the one thing you most want an employer to see and put it where the first page puts it: the top of your most recent role, or your summary.

Plainly

What it doesn’t do

It doesn’t apply for you

You send every application yourself. Ghosted helps you get the CV right and keeps track of what went where.

It doesn’t invent experience

If a job asks for something you haven’t done, Job fit shows it as a gap. It won’t write it in.

It doesn’t promise interviews

A CV that clearly shows what a job asks for gives you a better chance of a reply. No tool can promise one, and we won’t put a number on it.

It doesn’t keep your CV to itself

Download a PDF or a text copy any time, or a Ghosted CV file you can bring back later. Your CVs are yours on every plan.

Questions

Questions people ask about the CV builder

Is the CV builder free?

Yes. Free includes one CV with full editing, every design, Job fit on every job and PDF and text downloads, plus 5 AI writing requests a month. Plus adds more CVs, a version for each job, and as much AI help as you need.

Can I upload my CV as a Word file?

Yes: a PDF or a Word (.docx) file up to 4 MB. Ghosted reads it into sections you can edit and keeps your original file as it was.

Will the AI make things up?

It isn’t allowed to. Every suggestion is checked in code against your CV, and one that adds a skill, employer, title or number your CV doesn’t support is dropped. When only you know the answer, it asks you instead.

What happens to my CVs if Plus ends?

Everything you made stays yours, to open, edit and download. Only making more, like new versions for new jobs, needs Plus again.

Does Ghosted send my CV to employers?

Only when you do. When you apply with a CV, Ghosted keeps a copy of that exact file with the job, so you always know what they have.

Is this the same as tailoring my CV myself?

It’s the same idea with help along the way. If you’d rather do it by hand, our guide to tailoring a CV to a job description walks through it step by step.
